The 2021 Toyota Highlander is the modern-day version of the old-school family station wagon with 3-row seating. A bold design and chiselled shape and contoured lines display the perfect balance of power and refinement. There are three sets of seats on the inside, with available heated and ventilated front seats that will cool down or warm up on demand, while available second-row seats can help keep passengers warm. The Highlander's roomy interior gives you enough space to seat up to eight and provides impressive legroom, even for those in the back.
With more rugged external detailing, exclusive 20-inch tires, black outer highlights, and a sportier suspension calibration, the XSE pounds up the looks. Additional driver-assistance capabilities include quasi crisis driving, which is intended to aid drivers in avoiding crashes.
The Highlander is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 295 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front- or all-wheel drive. The V-6 was capable of tackling brief on-ramps with ease. The handling is uninspiring but reliable, and the riding is ideal for family chauffeuring.
When fitted with a front-wheel drive, the Toyota Highlander V-6 can achieve up to 29 mpg on the highway- drive reduces this by 2 mpg. Front-wheel-drive hybrids get 36 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, while hybrids get 36 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.
Most trims come with an 8.0-inch infotainment interface, but the Highlander Limited and Platinum get a 12.3-inch touchscreen. A JBL audio system with 11 speakers is available. Both Toyota models come equipped with a SiriusXM satellite radio, an Amazon Alexa, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay integration.
Toyota's warranty service is standard in the market, but customers still get two years of free routine servicing, which is a good bonus that other competitors don't have. The hybrid-component warranty on the electrified Highlander is different and covers the vehicle for eight years or 100,000 miles.
The Highlander received a five-star safety ranking from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as well as being designated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2021 Highlander comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance features, as is typical of Toyota.
